Aromatherapy: How it Works: Part 2

In the last article we talked about how aromatherapy affects part of the brain. In this article we will talk about how essential oils can directly interact with the skin. Specifically, we will talk about terpenes.

Terpenes are chemical compounds within essential oils that give the oil its specific aroma. Terpenes will also bind with specific receptors in the skin and cause a therapeutic reaction.

Essential oils have a palette of many types of terpenes which combine together to make its aroma. Let’s go over some specific terpenes, explore which oils they are highly found in, and how they can benefit the body.

  1. Beta-caryophyllene:
Beta-caryophyllene binds with the same receptors as CBD. It creates a spicy aroma and has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. It is found in copaiba, black pepper, clove, and cinnamon.

  2. Alpha-pinene:
Alpha-pinene has anti-inflammatory and pain relieving effects. It produces a pine scented aroma, and is found in frankincense, juniper, and rosemary essential oils.

  3. Linalool:
Linalool produces a floral scent and is primarily found in lavender, but can be also found in clary sage, mint, bergamot, and coriander. Linalool can reduce skin irritation, and can enhance the effects of CBD.

  4. Myrcene:
Myrcene is the fundamental building block of more complex terpenes and has sedative and anti-inflammatory effects. Combined with CBD it can produce a relaxing effect. It has an earthy or musky aroma. It is found in cannabis, mangoes, west indian bay, lemongrass, hops, and thyme.

  5. Menthol:
Menthol is the most widely used terpene in the world. It produces a numbing and cooling affect when used on the skin. It is also a counterirritant, causing an extremely mild area of inflammation. This brings blood to the area and distracts from the original source of pain. Menthol produces a minty aroma and is found in peppermint and spearmint. It is also produced synthetically from thymol.

Many of CedarOak’s aromatherapy selections are based on the physical effects of the terpenes. Visit our services page to find out more about the oils we use, or book an appointment and find out the benefits of aromatherapy blends first-hand!
